I will be posting here recipes from the book ‘Mais Recipes’ so as to share them with as many people as possible.  Hope you’ll enjoy them.

Starting with a dessert…as they say in our country “muh meetha karo” which means “sweeten ones mouth” before embarking on an auspicious journey/event.

Bread Pudding

  • Servings: 8-10
  • Difficulty: Average

  • 4 slices bread
  • ½ litre milk
  • ½ cup sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 tbsp. raisins/sultanas (optional)
  • 1 tsp. vanilla essence
  • 2 tbsp. sugar, for caramel
  • (Place sugar in a pan on low flame and heat till the sugar melts and turns golden brown)


  1. Break the bread into small pieces. Heat the milk and bring to a boil.  Add the bread pieces, sugar and stir till dissolved.  Take off the fire and cool.
  2. When cool add the eggs and beat the mixture well.  Add vanilla essence and raisins.
  3. Take a medium cake tin and coat with caramel.  Add the bread mixture and steam or bake on medium low heat till done.
  4. To test if the pudding is done, insert a knife in the center and if it comes out clean the pudding is ready.
