DAL (Masoor, tur or moong dal)                  


  • 1 cup dal
  • 1 small onion
  • 2 green chillies, slit
  • 4 crushed garlic
  • Small pc. ginger
  • 1 medium tomato
  • ¼ tsp. turmeric powder
  • 2 tbsp. coriander leaves, chopped


  • 1 big onion, sliced
  • Few curry leaves
  • 1 tsp. mustard seeds
  • ½ tsp. cumin seeds
  • 1 tbsp. oil


  1. Wash the dal and drain. 
  2. Add 2 cups water and cook till tender. 
  3. Add sliced onion, green chillies, ginger, tomato, salt and turmeric powder  and cook till the dal is soft. 
  4. Take a pan and heat the oil, add mustard seeds, when they splutter add cumin, curry leaves and crushed garlic. 
  5. Add the sliced onion and fry till golden brown. 
  6. Pour the contents into the dal. 
  7. When it begins to boil add the coriander leaves and simmer 5 minutes.
  8. Serve hot with steamed rice.
