Tuna and Braised Onion Salad

  • 1 200 gm. Can Tuna or 4 tuna steaks
  • 3 large onions, cut into thick rounds
  • 2 tbsp. vinegar (red wine vinegar if available)
  • 1 bunch (about 120g) rocket or spinach
  • 1/2 bunch (about 325g) romaine lettuce, shredded
  • 2 to 3 tbsp. olive oil or butter
  1. Heat oil/butter in a pan, add onions and cook covered, stirring occasionally, about 20 minutes till onions are soft and translucent and slightly browned.
  2. Add vinegar, simmer uncovered, 1 minute.
  3. Add tuna to same pan and cook uncovered until tuna is cooked as desired.
  4.  If using canned tuna, break roughly into large chunks in the pan itself and cook till tuna is well heated through.
  5. Remove tuna from pan and cut into pieces.
  6. Mix  warm tuna with braised onions, rocket/spinach and romaine lettuce and serve with crusty bread as a meal or simply as a salad.
