Khichidi

Ingredients

  • 1 cup basmati rice
  • ½ cup masoor dal
  • 3 cups water
  • 1 tomato, chopped
  • 2 onions, chopped
  • ½ tsp. turmeric powder
  • ½ tsp. pepper powder (optional)
  • ½ tsp. cumin seeds (optional)
  • 2” pc. cinnamon
  • 5 cloves
  • 2 tbsp. ghee
  • Salt to taste

Method

  1. Wash and soak the rice and dal together for ½ hour. 
  2. Heat ghee in a vessel, add cumin and the whole spices, add onion and fry till light brown. 
  3. Add the tomatoes and turmeric powder and fry till soft. 
  4. Add the drained rice and dal and mix for a few mintues. 
  5. Add water and salt and keep on high flame and bring to a boil. 
  6. Reduce flame to very low, cover and cook till done.
  7. Serve hot with papad, pickle and Kadhi.

P.S.:    Masoor dal may be substituted with yellow moong dal (without skin)
